Sales Territory Design

Sales territory design is the practice of dividing accounts or prospects among reps or teams to balance opportunity and workload.

Territories can be built on geography, industry segment, account size, or named-account lists, and good design weighs potential value against the effort required to cover each account, not just headcount.

A practical example

Example: instead of splitting a country by region, a team groups mid-market manufacturing accounts into one territory and enterprise accounts into another, so reps develop relevant expertise per segment.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the tool supports rule-based territory definitions (attributes, lists, geography) rather than manual assignment only.
  • Confirm it can score territories on workload and potential using your own account data, so imbalances are visible before rollout.
  • Verify reassignment scenarios can be simulated with attainment impact previewed for affected reps.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Balanced territories on paper can still fail if account-level effort varies widely; revisit design after real coverage data accumulates.
