Event Backfill

Event backfill imports historical events that were never captured by a newly connected system — for example, pre-integration activity from a source platform — so its automations and attribution start with complete data.

It differs from event replay, which reprocesses events already in the stream. Backfill forces two decisions: how far back to import, and how deduplication handles overlap with live data.

A practical example

Example: a team connects a customer data platform to two years of email engagement history from their existing platform.

They backfill 12 months, tag backfilled events with an origin flag, and deduplicate against live tracking so attribution models do not double-count the overlap period.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask what historical depth each connector can import and at what throughput.
  • Check whether backfilled events are distinguishable from live events downstream.
  • Confirm the deduplication rule when a backfilled event matches one already captured.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: deep backfills are slow and expensive to process, and old events may use outdated schemas or consent rules — importing everything can distort attribution or violate current privacy settings.
