Event Normalization

Event normalization is the practice of harmonizing event names, payload structures and timestamps across sources so downstream automations work from a consistent vocabulary.

One tool sends 'form_submit', another 'FormSubmission', a third 'lead.captured'; normalization maps them to shared definitions. It differs from record-level data hygiene: the unit here is the event, not the contact record.

A practical example

Example: behavioral scoring counts form submissions from web, a mobile SDK and a chat tool.

Without normalization, two of the three names never match the scoring rule's event list, so the same action is scored inconsistently by source.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform offers a mapping layer for incoming event names or requires upstream renaming.
  • Check how timestamp formats and time zones from different sources are reconciled.
  • Review whether payload schema differences are validated or silently dropped.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Normalization rules need ongoing maintenance as sources rename or restructure events, or mappings silently break.
