Event Routing

Event routing is content-based conditional dispatch: the platform inspects each incoming event and sends it to one of several possible workflows or destinations based on its type, source, or attributes.

This differs from event fan-out, where one event goes to all consumers. Routing rules are what keep a single event stream from triggering irrelevant automations.

A practical example

Example: a demo request event routes to the sales-alert workflow, while a webinar signup event from the same stream routes to the nurture-sequence workflow, because a rule matches on the event's source field.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can routing rules match on multiple event attributes, or only on event type?
  • Does the platform log which route each event took, so misroutes are traceable?
  • What happens to events that match no rule — are they dropped, queued, or flagged?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Routing adds a decision layer that can misroute events if rules drift out of date with your event schema; plan rule reviews as part of ongoing maintenance.
