Sync Conflict Resolution

Sync conflict resolution is the explicit policy that decides which system wins when two connected platforms change the same field between syncs.

Common policies include last-write-wins, system-of-record priority, and field-level rules where, say, the CRM owns lead status while the marketing platform owns engagement fields.

A practical example

Example: a rep marks a lead as Disqualified in the CRM while a nurture workflow marks the same lead Engaged.

With a documented policy, the CRM wins on status and the platform keeps the engagement score; without one, the result depends on sync timing.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which conflict policy the platform supports per field, not just per object.
  • Test a deliberate two-sided edit in a sandbox and inspect which value survives.
  • Confirm the losing write is logged or queued, not silently discarded.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: strict system-of-record rules reduce surprises but block legitimate updates from the other side, so field ownership needs ongoing review as processes change.
