Workflow Resume Logic

Workflow resume logic is the policy for what resuming means after a platform interruption mid-run: whether time-based waits recompute from the interruption or from their original schedule, whether already-sent steps are skipped, and whether the record re-enters at the failed step.

Checkpoints are the mechanism that saves progress; resume logic is the decision about how that saved progress is used.

A practical example

Example: a five-day nurture flow is down for six hours on day two.

Resume logic determines whether each contact's remaining waits shift by six hours, restart from zero, or whether affected contacts fall out of the flow entirely.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask explicitly how waits recompute after downtime — this varies widely between vendors.
  • Test a deliberate interruption in a sandbox and compare before/after schedules.
  • Confirm whether steps already executed are marked to prevent duplicates.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Recomputing waits keeps timing honest but can push time-sensitive sends past their useful window.
