Integration Backfill

Integration backfill is the one-time loading of historical records into a newly connected system.

Unlike incremental sync, which handles ongoing changes only, backfill moves past data so the new system starts with usable history instead of an empty slate.

A practical example

Example: before switching marketing platforms, a team backfills two years of campaign activity into the new MAP so attribution reports retain their baseline from day one.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the platform handles historical records that lack fields the new schema requires.
  • Check whether backfill runs can be throttled or scheduled to avoid disrupting live syncs.
  • Confirm how backfilled records are flagged so reports can distinguish old data from new activity.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Backfill is resource-intensive and often incomplete: older systems may hold duplicates, gaps, or formats that never map cleanly, so expect a validation phase rather than a perfect copy.
