Integration Blueprint

An Integration Blueprint is a design document created before an integration is built.

It records the sync direction (one-way or two-way), which objects and fields move between systems, how conflicts are resolved, and what happens when a record fails.

It is a pre-build artifact, distinct from lifecycle planning that spans the whole lifespan.

A practical example

Label: hypothetical.

Before connecting a marketing platform to a CRM, a team drafts a blueprint stating that leads flow one-way, the email field is the dedupe key, and failed records queue for review rather than being dropped.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Does the blueprint specify sync direction and dedupe keys for every object?
  • Does it define error handling, such as retry rules and a failure queue?
  • Can IT and marketing both sign off on field mappings before development starts?

Limitations and tradeoffs

A blueprint is only useful if it is kept current; designs that drift from the live integration mislead new maintainers.
