Integration Runbook

An Integration Runbook is an operational document that tells an on-call person exactly what to do when a sync fails.

It lists symptoms, diagnostic commands or dashboards, restart procedures, escalation contacts and when to involve the vendor. It is a response document for incidents, unlike a blueprint, which is a design-phase artifact.

A practical example

Label: hypothetical. The nightly lead sync fails the morning of a campaign launch.

The on-call marketer follows the runbook: check the error queue, confirm the API token expiry, regenerate it, replay the failed batch, and notify sales that leads may arrive late.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Does the runbook cover the most common failure modes with concrete steps?
  • Does it state who to escalate to, including vendor support channels and hours?
  • Has someone actually rehearsed the steps, not just written them?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Runbooks go stale as systems change; schedule reviews after every integration change or incident.
