Schema Enforcement

Schema enforcement is the practice of actively blocking or correcting incoming data that does not match the expected structure, rather than only detecting the mismatch.

When a record arrives with a missing required field, a wrong data type or an unexpected format, an enforcement layer rejects it, quarantines it or transforms it before it moves downstream.

A practical example

Example: a form integration sends phone numbers as free text.

An enforcement rule that requires digits and a country code either reformats the value or routes the record to a quarantine queue instead of writing it to the CRM.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform can reject, quarantine or transform nonconforming records, and where rejected data lands.
  • Check if required fields, data types and formats can be defined per source, not just globally.
  • Confirm that enforcement failures trigger alerts so teams learn about broken sources quickly.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Strict enforcement reduces downstream errors but can reject valid records when sources change legitimately, so quarantine queues need regular human review.
