Webhook Listener

A webhook listener is the running service that receives incoming webhook events at an endpoint and processes them: it verifies the sender, parses the payload and passes the data to the next step.

The listener, not the URL itself, determines whether events are handled promptly, queued under load or dropped when the service is down.

A practical example

Example: a chat tool sends a webhook the moment a visitor requests a demo.

If the listener is offline or its queue is full, the event may be lost unless the sender retries, so teams monitor listener health and queue depth.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the listener authenticates senders, such as signature verification, and rejects unauthorized calls.
  • Check what happens under load: does the listener queue events, shed them or fail visibly?
  • Confirm there is monitoring and alerting on listener uptime and processing lag.

Limitations and tradeoffs

A listener can be up and still fall behind; processing capacity matters as much as availability, and backlogs can make real-time data arrive too late to act on.
