Ad Relevance Score

An ad relevance score is a platform-generated estimate of how well an ad matches the audience it is shown to, typically derived from predicted engagement rates, ad-to-keyword or ad-to-audience fit, and post-click experience signals.

Major ad platforms publish variants of this metric under different names and scales.

Higher relevance usually correlates with cheaper delivery, because platforms reward ads they predict will engage users, but the score itself is diagnostic, not a billing line item.

A practical example

Example: two ads in the same ad group show different relevance ratings; the team rewrites the lower-rated ad's headline to match the search intent it targets and monitors whether the rating improves.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which inputs feed the score on each platform you use, since definitions and scales differ and are not directly comparable.
  • Check whether the score updates in near real time or lags behind creative changes by days.
  • Confirm you can segment the score by audience, placement, and device to find where relevance breaks down.

Limitations and tradeoffs

A high relevance score does not guarantee conversions, and chasing the score alone can push teams toward clickbait creative that engages but does not sell.
