Audience Expansion

Audience expansion is the practice of extending campaign targeting beyond your defined core segments, using lookalike modeling, broader interest categories or platform-suggested reach.

It is a deliberate tradeoff: larger audiences lower effective frequency and typically reduce conversion rate per impression, but can surface demand your existing segmentation misses.

Expansion should be measured against the original segment, not evaluated in isolation.

A practical example

Example: a B2B team running ads only to its CRM list of 8,000 contacts creates a lookalike audience from closed-won accounts and runs both in parallel, comparing cost per qualified lead after a fixed test period.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the platform lets you exclude existing customers and CRM contacts from expanded audiences.
  • Confirm you can split budget between core and expanded audiences so results stay comparable.
  • Verify the tool reports expansion performance separately rather than blending it into aggregate campaign metrics.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Expansion dilutes message relevance; broadened targeting often needs separate creative and can raise cost per lead in the short term.
