Audience Overlap

Audience overlap analysis measures how much two or more segments share the same individuals. High overlap means campaigns compete for the same users, inflate frequency, and distort budget allocation.

Platforms and CDPs expose overlap tools to compare segments before launch or across running campaigns.

A practical example

Example: before launching, you compare a 'frequent buyers' segment with a 'high LTV' segment and find 60 percent overlap, so you merge them and redirect the freed budget to true prospecting.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether overlap is computed on resolved identities or raw platform IDs, since the latter hides cross-channel duplication.
  • Verify you can analyze overlap across platforms, not only within one ad account.
  • Look for actionable output: suggested exclusions or merges, not just a percentage matrix.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Overlap percentages are only estimates; platform-reported reach uses different identity graphs and cannot be summed precisely. Use overlap to guide structure, not as an exact deduplication guarantee.
