Audience Suppression

Audience suppression is the deliberate exclusion of defined people from targeting or messaging, such as removing current customers from acquisition campaigns, recent purchasers from offers, or unsubscribed contacts from all sends.

Suppression lists are maintained as living segments and applied at activation time.

A practical example

Example: your acquisition campaign excludes a synced 'active customer' list refreshed daily, so paid spend stops reaching people who already converted and offers stop going to recent buyers.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Verify suppression syncs in near real time or at a frequency that matches your sales cycle; weekly lists leak conversions.
  • Check whether suppression applies across all channels from one source of truth or must be maintained per platform.
  • Confirm compliance handling: suppression must reliably honor opt-outs and do-not-contact lists.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Suppression reduces reach and can exclude useful prospects if lists are too broad. Review exclusion logic when customer status, eligibility or campaign goals change, and check which qualified contacts are being removed.
