Email Suppression

Email suppression is the mechanism that prevents specific contacts from receiving certain or all email, whether due to unsubscribes, complaints, legal restrictions, bounces or internal rules.

Unlike deletion, suppressed contacts remain in the database with their history intact. Robust suppression distinguishes global suppression (never email this person) from campaign-level or category-level suppression (no product updates, but invoices are fine).

A practical example

Example: a contact unsubscribes from newsletters but still must receive transactional receipts. A well-configured system suppresses them from marketing sends while transactional messages continue through a separate stream.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether suppression lists are enforced across all tools in the suite, including sales outreach, not just the email module
  • Verify support for reason codes and audit trails so you can demonstrate why a contact was excluded
  • Test whether list imports automatically respect existing suppression rules or can accidentally re-add suppressed contacts

Limitations and tradeoffs

Overly broad suppression can block legitimate communication, while narrow rules risk compliance gaps; you need granular, well-documented categories.
