Email Cadence

Email cadence is the planned rhythm of email contact across all campaigns: how many messages a contact receives per week, on which days, and in what order across programs.

Good cadence management prevents overlapping campaigns from bombarding the same person, coordinates marketing and sales sends, and adapts frequency to engagement level. It is a planning discipline enforced through platform controls, not a single feature.

A practical example

Example: a subscriber is active in three programs: newsletter, product tips and event invites. A cadence rule caps them at three marketing emails per week and prioritizes the most recent program they engaged with.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform supports global frequency caps and priority rules across all active campaigns
  • Verify you can set cadence per segment, since new leads and long-time customers tolerate different rhythms
  • Check whether reporting shows contacts' total message load, so you can spot over-mailed segments

Limitations and tradeoffs

Too-slow cadence loses mindshare while too-fast cadence drives unsubscribes; the right rhythm differs by audience and must be tested, not copied.
