Bounce Rate

Bounce rate measures the share of sessions that do not meet an analytics tool’s engagement criteria. In Google Analytics 4, it is the percentage of sessions that are not engaged.

A single-page visit is therefore not automatically a bounce: duration or a recorded key event can qualify it as engaged. Check the platform definition and configuration before comparing reports or judging a landing page.

A practical example

Example: a campaign landing page shows a 70% bounce rate while the blog averages 55%; the team investigates the landing page's load time and message match before changing the ad spend.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the tool defines a bounce and whether the definition can be adjusted to your event model.
  • Check whether bounce data can be segmented by traffic source, device, and campaign.
  • Confirm the tool distinguishes bounced single-page sessions from short but engaged sessions.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Bounce Rate alone cannot prove why visitors leave; a single-page visit may still include a completed form or a scroll to the end, depending on how events are tracked.
