Campaign Governance

Campaign governance is the framework of roles, approval steps and guardrails that determines who can create, edit and launch campaigns, and what must pass review first.

It typically covers brand and legal review, audience and send-volume limits, suppression rules and naming conventions. The goal is not bureaucracy but preventing predictable failures: sends to the wrong segment, duplicate messaging or compliance breaches.

A practical example

Example: a team defines that any campaign exceeding 50,000 recipients or touching an unsubscribed-suppression list requires a second approver, while small internal tests launch freely.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm the platform supports role-based permissions granular enough to separate drafting from launching.
  • Test whether approval workflows can be conditional, for example triggered by audience size or send time.
  • Check that every launch is logged with who approved it and what version went out.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Heavy governance slows experimentation; if every send needs sign-off, teams route around the process and the controls lose meaning.
