Campaign Measurement

Campaign measurement is the discipline of deciding, before launch, which metrics define success for a specific campaign and how they will be collected.

It differs from reporting: measurement is the upfront design of hypotheses, primary and guardrail metrics, and comparison methods, while reporting packages results afterwards.

A practical example

Example: before a webinar campaign, the team defines success as qualified registrations above a set threshold, uses a holdout region as a comparison group, and agrees that open rates are diagnostic only, not success criteria.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask vendors how they support pre-registered goals and whether campaign objectives can be stored alongside results.
  • Verify you can isolate campaign influence without double counting when multiple touches occur in the same period.
  • Check whether the tool supports comparison groups or incrementality-style tests, not just per-channel totals.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Measurement quality depends on traffic volume and data hygiene. Low-lead B2B campaigns often lack statistical power for clean conclusions, so expect directional signals rather than proof in most program designs.
