Campaign Planning

Campaign planning is the front-end work of defining a campaign before anything is built: objectives, target segments, channel mix, key messages, asset needs, budget, owners, and dates.

Good planning produces a brief that build teams can execute and stakeholders can approve. It is distinct from orchestration, which coordinates execution across channels once the plan exists.

A practical example

Example: before building anything, a team writes a brief for a renewal-season campaign: goal of 20 percent more renewal intent, three segments, email plus webinar channels, four assets, one owner per asset, and a six-week calendar.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the platform includes planning artifacts like briefs, calendars, or task boards, or relies on external tools.
  • Verify planned audiences can be validated against the database for size and overlap before build starts.
  • Test whether plan owners, deadlines, and approvals are visible to everyone building the campaign.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Planning tools add process that can slow small teams; the tradeoff is between speed today and the rework, missed approvals, and unclear ownership you risk without a plan.
