Click-Through Rate (CTR)

Click-Through Rate (CTR) is the percentage of people who click a link after seeing it, calculated as clicks divided by impressions.

It applies to paid ads, email links, organic search results, and buttons on a page.

Its meaning shifts with context: in search ads, CTR reflects how well the ad matches the query; in email, a link-level CTR shows which specific links draw attention; on a results page, it indicates title and snippet appeal.

Because impressions are counted differently across platforms, CTR is best used within a single channel over time rather than compared across channels.

For automation buyers, the useful capability is defining CTR consistently in your own reporting instead of relying on each platform's native number.

A practical example

Example: an ad with 20,000 impressions and 600 clicks has a 3% CTR; the team tracks that figure week over week within the same campaign rather than benchmarking it against email CTR.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the tool lets you define CTR with your own numerator and denominator across sources.
  • Verify CTR can be broken down by creative, placement, audience, and time period.
  • Confirm the tool distinguishes link-level CTR from message-level CTR in email reporting.

Limitations and tradeoffs

A high CTR does not mean quality traffic; clickbait can raise CTR while lowering conversion, so read it together with post-click behavior.
