Click-to-Open Rate (CTOR)

Click-to-Open Rate (CTOR) is an email metric that divides unique clicks by unique opens, answering a narrower question than CTR: among people who opened the email, how many engaged with its content?

Because it removes the subject line and sender reputation from the equation, CTOR isolates the performance of the body copy, layout, and calls to action.

A low CTOR with a healthy open rate suggests the subject line promises something the content does not deliver.

Note that opens themselves are estimated via tracking pixels and can be inflated by privacy features like Apple Mail Privacy Protection, which also distorts CTOR.

When evaluating email platforms, check whether CTOR is reported natively and whether opens can be adjusted or excluded.

A practical example

Example: a newsletter has a 30% open rate and a 12% CTOR, meaning 40% of openers clicked; the team uses that ratio to test whether a shorter body with one call to action changes the share of openers who click.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm the platform reports CTOR natively or lets you build it from unique clicks and unique opens.
  • Check whether open tracking can be flagged or excluded to reduce distortion from privacy proxies.
  • Verify CTOR can be compared across segments and automated sequences in one view.

Limitations and tradeoffs

CTOR inherits every weakness of open tracking; as pixel-based opens become less reliable, CTOR should be read alongside click-based metrics rather than treated as a stable absolute.
