Conversion Path Analysis

Conversion path analysis studies the ordered sequence of touchpoints, pages, emails, and channels a user passes through before converting.

Unlike funnel analysis, which assumes one fixed stage order, path analysis accepts that journeys branch: some buyers read three blog posts before a demo, others arrive via search and convert the same day.

The output is typically a set of common path patterns with their conversion rates, which helps teams decide where to invest, for example in content that repeatedly appears on high-converting paths.

Interpretation requires care, because frequently seen paths are not automatically causal drivers of conversion.

A practical example

Example: path analysis shows that a common converting sequence is pricing page, case study, then demo request, while a non-converting pattern stalls at a webinar registration page; the team revises that page's follow-up sequence.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can the tool reconstruct ordered, multi-channel paths per contact, including offline steps like sales calls if you import them?
  • Does it group paths into recognizable patterns rather than showing thousands of unique sequences?
  • Can you compare conversion rates across path patterns within the same report?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Path data is observational: popular paths may simply reflect how most traffic behaves, so validate suspected winning paths with experiments before reallocating budget.
