Email Response Rate

Email response rate is the share of recipients who reply to an email, distinct from open rate or click-through rate.

In B2B it signals whether outreach starts a conversation, which is why reply-based metrics often matter more than delivery statistics when judging sequences.

A practical example

Example: a sales team sends 500 cold emails and receives 25 replies, a 5% response rate.

If 10 of those replies request a call, the team can judge whether the sequence generates meetings, not just activity.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm the platform counts replies per send and per sequence step, not just campaign-level totals.
  • Check whether replies are automatically detected, categorized (positive, out-of-office, unsubscribe) and routed to a rep.
  • Verify how the tool excludes auto-replies and bounces from response calculations.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Response rate is sensitive to list quality and send volume; a high rate on a tiny, hand-picked list may not survive scaling, so compare rates at similar list sizes.
