Engagement Rate

Engagement Rate is the share of people who interact with a piece of content relative to those who saw it.

The formula varies by channel: on social media it is usually interactions divided by impressions or followers; on email it may combine opens and clicks; on a website it can blend clicks, comments, or meaningful events.

Because the denominator changes, the same number can mean very different things across platforms.

For automation buyers, the value is in comparing like with like: a tool should let you define which events count as engagement and keep that definition consistent across campaigns.

It is a directional signal of content resonance, not a measure of revenue.

A practical example

Example: a LinkedIn post reaches 10,000 impressions and receives 300 reactions, comments, and shares, giving a 3% engagement rate; the team compares that figure only against posts with the same denominator.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm the platform documents exactly which events are counted as engagement and which denominator it uses.
  • Check whether you can customize engagement definitions per channel and keep them consistent across reports.
  • Verify that engagement data can be exported or synced so it can be compared alongside conversion metrics.

Limitations and tradeoffs

High engagement does not imply conversions or revenue; platforms also count passive or accidental interactions differently, so cross-channel comparisons need a shared definition.
