Incrementality Testing

Incrementality testing estimates the additional effect of a marketing activity by comparing a group that received it against a similar holdout group that did not.

Unlike attribution models, which assign credit for existing conversions, incrementality asks whether the activity caused conversions that would not otherwise have happened.

A practical example

Example: a brand excludes 10% of a lookalike audience from retargeting ads for four weeks, then compares purchase rates between exposed and holdout groups to estimate the ads' incremental lift.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the tool supports holdout or geo-based designs and helps size the control group.
  • Ask how it validates that exposed and holdout groups are comparable before the test.
  • Confirm it reports lift with confidence ranges rather than a single point estimate.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Holdout tests withhold marketing from real prospects, which has an opportunity cost, and results can be inconclusive when the tested channel has small incremental effect.
