Contact Source Of Truth

A Contact Source Of Truth is a per-field arbitration rule for the contact object: when two connected systems disagree about an email address, job title, or consent status, the matrix defines which system wins and in which sync direction.

Contact-level conflicts are higher-stakes than account-level ones because email and consent errors directly damage deliverability and compliance.

Typical assignments: consent owned by the MAP or a consent platform, email owned by CRM with enrichment as write-once, and job title owned by the enrichment vendor with periodic refresh.

A practical example

Example: an enrichment vendor overwrites a contact's email with a pattern-based guess. With a source-of-truth matrix, CRM wins on email, the overwrite is rejected, and the conflict is logged for review.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask each integration which fields it writes and whether per-field write direction is configurable.
  • Verify conflict logging exists so overwrites are visible rather than silent.
  • Confirm consent fields can be locked to a single owning system across all connectors.

Limitations and tradeoffs

A static matrix ages quickly: enrichment data decays and consent rules change, so field ownership needs scheduled review, not a one-time configuration decision.
