Pipeline Source Of Truth

Pipeline Source Of Truth is the declared authoritative source for the aggregate pipeline number: when the CRM, a forecasting tool, and the BI layer show different pipeline totals, this decision states which figure is authoritative and why.

It differs from pipeline governance (the rules managing pipeline) and from per-field deal ownership: this arbitrates the aggregate number across reporting layers.

Executives routinely see conflicting totals because each layer filters, snapshots, or recalculates differently, so the declaration must also define the calculation — which statuses, stages, and snapshot dates count.

A practical example

A CFO sees 12 million in the CRM, 10.5 million in the BI dashboard, and 11 million in the forecast tool.

The declared source is the CRM's open-pipeline total as of Monday, filtered to defined statuses; the other layers are labeled derived views with documented differences.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can the authoritative calculation — status filters, stage inclusion, snapshot timing — be documented and reproduced in each tool?
  • Do derived layers label themselves as derived and explain their variance from the authoritative figure?
  • Can the declaration be changed deliberately, with a logged transition, rather than drifting as tools are added?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Declaring a source does not make the other numbers wrong; each layer serves a purpose, and the declaration must be paired with documented reconciliation rules.
