Opportunity Source Of Truth

Opportunity Source Of Truth is the per-field arbitration for the deal object: when the CRM, CPQ (configure-price-quote software), a forecasting tool, and the data warehouse disagree about a deal, this matrix declares which system wins for each field.

Deal data flows through more systems than any other object, so silent overwrites are common.

The practical output is a field-ownership table — stage owned by CRM, pricing owned by CPQ, forecast category owned by the forecasting tool — that drives sync direction and conflict handling.

A practical example

A CPQ quote updates a deal's amount after a discount, while the CRM holds the rep's entered value.

With a declared matrix, CPQ owns amount and its value flows one way into the CRM; the rep's manual edit is flagged as a conflict instead of silently overwriting the quote.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can ownership be declared per field, not per object, and enforced in sync configuration?
  • When a conflict occurs, is the losing edit preserved somewhere reviewable rather than discarded?
  • Does the platform log which system last wrote each field, so disputes can be traced?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Ownership declared on paper does nothing unless the integration layer actually enforces direction per field; verify enforcement, not just documentation.
